Incorporation
 Magna became a metro township in 2015. In 2024, H.B. 35. passed in the Utah Legislature and on May 1, 2024, Magna became a City.  2024, H.B. 35. passed in the Utah Legislature and on May 1, 2024, Magna became a City.
Government

The city is governed by an elected council consisting of five council members, one of whom is selected by the others to serve as Mayor.

Location
Magna City sits below the Oquirrh Mountain Range in the southwest quadrant of the Salt Lake Valley. The famous Great Salt Lake is located just west of Magna.
Known For 
  • Magna’s Historic Main Street is a quaint and picturesque downtown and a popular location for filmmakers. 
  • Magna Earthquake: On March 18, 2020, Magna was the site of the epicenter of a 5.7 magnitude earthquake. The quake was followed by more than 850 aftershocks. The tremor struck at approximately 7:10 a.m. and was felt strongly across the Wasatch Front.  Damage was light, although several historic buildings along Main Street suffered damage. 
  • Magna sits on the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere. The sunsets at the Great Salt Lake are incredible.

History
  • Pioneers settled in Magna beginning in 1851. Early farmers settled at the base of the northern Oquirrh Mountains and called their community Pleasant Green. 
  • In the early 1900s, copper mining in the Oquirrhs began transforming the area from an agricultural to an industrial community.   The Utah Copper company, which later became Kennecott Copper Corp.
